My Destiny

Filed under: Blahs, Music, Opinions — Guang @ 5:28 pm

Katharine McPhee. American Idol season 5’s runner up after Taylor Hicks, season winner. Although she is the runner u, she has once again proven time after time that she can do better than just being the runner up. Her new single, My Destiny, just released is much much better than the one she sang live during the finals. I have to admit, she wasn’t at her tip top condition during the finals well, now after recording her song in a controllled environment every notes was hit on the spot.

The song, My Destiny, scores high on the cheese level in the lyrics department. Just reading the lyrics inspires the mind and calms the soul.

Katharine McPhee
My Destiny

I have always dreamed of this
I’ll admit that there was something I missed
Wonderin’ if it is for real
Every mistake, every wrong turn
Every time I lost my way
Led me to this, moment of bliss, tonight

With you, finally I can break free
With you, I saw a changing in my destiny
Dream come true, it’s so funny now that I see
How different life turned out to be

You were always by my side
That you believed in me was enough reason why
I didn’t stop, didn’t give up
Even if I sometimes lost hope
I did my best, and I am blessed
In life

With you, finally I can break free
With you, I saw a changing in my destiny
Dream come true, it’s so funny now that I see
How different life turned to be

Can I get any higher
Tell me, does it get any stronger?
I owe it to you, that I made it through
I never could’ve done it, without you

With you, I can break free, yeah
I saw a changing in my destiny
Dream come true, it’s so funny now that I see
How different life turned out to be

Oh, cause of you, I saw a changing in my destiny
Dream come true, it’s so funny now that I see
How different life turned out to be
I’ve realized that it’s my destiny

Chemical Engineering

Filed under: Academic, Blahs, Confessions, Frustration, Opinions — Guang @ 7:28 pm

I just found out today how truly difficult Chemical Engineering is. And this is just the start. It all started when I was assigned to design a functional and practical chemical plant to produce benzoic acid on an industrial scale. Doesn’t sound that hard huh?

Well, let me tell you exactly what I am supposed to do:

Describe the chemical product i.e. benzoic acid in detail from properties chemically to physically to history.

Describe applications and uses of the product.

Perform a market assessment locally, nationally and globally and also possible future outlook.

Perform a detailed site study to state where chemical plant will be located and built and detailed and logical reasons why the place has been chosen. Sites are from real places located in Malaysia.

Design several process out of scratch to produce benzoic acid ideally 2-3 different and distinct processes.

Propose a process that can successfully produce benzoic acid on an industrial scale.

  1. Perform detailed calculations to calculate flow rates and amount of raw materials required over a span of time to produce exactly 50,000 metric tons of benzoic acid per year.
  2. Calculate mass transfers, energy balances and flow rates of materials within reactors in the process.
  3. If necessary, add additional equipments such as heat exchangers, distillation columns, reactors, boilers, separators, settlers, condensers, pumps etc.
  4. Calculate temperature, pressure and other conditions for each reactor.
  5. Calculate volume and size of each equipment used within the process.
  6. Calculate power consumed for each and every equipment in the process.
  7. Design mechanical equipments for major reactors.
  8. Design equipment to purify benzoic acid product at the end of the process to meet industry standards.
  9. Design equipment for treatment of by-products for recirculation, sale or waste.
  10. Recheck whole process for any flaws that may cause production to halt during process.

Perform hazard study for each and every line in the process for every potential and possible accident or incident that can cause the process to halt.

If any hazards found and deemed very dangerous, modify process flow above to increase safety.

Perform environmental studies around the area and potential impacts in the local areas surrounding the plant.

Design and decide on plant layout of each and every equipment on plant site.

Perform a detailed and current economic analysis for the plant which includes:

  1. Number of engineers that are hired to operate the plant efficiently.
  2. Number of skilled laborers to operate the plant’s equipments.
  3. Number of unskilled workers required for non-technical areas of the plant i.e. cleaning.
  4. Number administrative officers and workers required to administer the plant.
  5. Total cost of raw materials.
  6. Total power and water consumption of the entire plant.
  7. Current price of benzoic acid in the market.
  8. Calculate the estimated profit of the plant annually. (If process is deemed unprofitable, start design of the plant from square one)
  9. Transport costs of product and by-products for sale and distribution.
  10. Total estimate maintenance cost.
  11. Total cost for every worker’s salary.

State a conclusion and state recommendations.

Present entire research design for assessment.

There, this is what I and 4 other group members are supposed to perform and complete within 3 weeks before my final examinations. Since this project took off, it really hit hard on me that Chemical Engineering will and always be not an easy thing to do.

Well, I guess I can use this excuse to control my spending of money and outings that aren’t necessary since I need to save as much as possible for my studies in the UK.

Proton Satria

Filed under: Blahs, I Love Malaysia, Opinions — Guang @ 8:23 pm

Finally, Proton has come out with something that will change the way I look at Proton forever.

May I present you, the one and only car that I actually like from Proton, the Proton Satria Neo!

Its sexylicious! Not to mention sportylicious too! I love the colour orange. Give that all sporty, new-age-ish and modern look to the car.

It looks like a smaller Gen 2 but even better looking compared to the Gen 2.

The interior is all in shades of black. Does that look so elegant. The perfect understatement. The seats look comfy too! See those cushions protruding out from the sides? It looks like they’re going to hug the person sitting on it. Ooo, comfy!

I particularly love the dashboard. The blue meters are so calming and pleasing to the eyes. The steering wheel however looks a little plastic. If it was leather, it would have been superb.

Oh oh, the samurai sword hand brake, simliar to the Gen 2 too. Looks good. Different from what you find in other cars, the normal straight pole sticking out of the centre.

Finally, the stereo. Not to say that it’s an outstandingly superbly wonderful set of stereos, but its simplicity and buttons all fit the car nicely.

This post is not an advertisement for Proton and they didn’t pay me a single cent for this. However, I must say that Proton has finally done something good and in the right way to a brighter future. At least I see some progress in this Malaysian company. The better the company performs, the more money those people in there can fork out into their pockets, isn’t it? So isn’t it a good thing for the country’s image and the executives of the company. Just look at MAS, if the company’s loosing money, how to fork out more money, when the coffers all go kaput?!

Although I’m seriously against corruption, at least now Proton is walking to a brighter future and will hopefully one day eradicate the negative views of overseas car buyers have on our country’s brand. Finally, a step forward for our country instead of the usual step backwards. Kudos to Proton and it’s new executive!

P.S. Some pictures taken from paultan.org as seen on the image itself. He’s the best in this! ;)

Exhausted

Filed under: Academic, Blahs, Frustration, Opinions — Guang @ 10:13 pm

One week and two days has passed since I last blogged. I guess this is the longest time between blogging for me. I was really a very busy week indeed. Studies are getting more and more intense.

The worst thing today was I got back my Math’s quiz paper. To my surprise, I got quite low compared to what I was expecting. 35/50. That’s like 70% only! The lowest marks I’ve ever got for Maths this year! How could this happen! I checked the paper and it was filled with careless mistakes here and there. I could have gotten almost full marks if I wasn’t that careless. I guess I have to give myself a slap in the face to wake up and be more careful next time especially in the finals. The highest was 48/50 and the average was 37.7 for the whole of the Engineering school and 42 specifically for Chemical Engineering. I am less than average?! This is unacceptable! No, especially the subject which is the easiest for me! No!

Sorry that you guys have to hear me whine all the way. I just need to let everything out…

06-06-06

Filed under: Blahs, Frustration, I Love Malaysia, Opinions, Time — Guang @ 7:38 pm

Well, what actually happened yesterday in my life during the sixth day of the sixth month in the year 2006? Nothing bad actually happened yesterday on a day where many perceived as the day of the devil i.e. 666, the number of the devil. First, how can it be that day of the devil when it’s 2000 years overdue? The most appropriate day for “it” to happen is the sixth day of the sixth month in the year 6, that’s after Christ. It could be before Christ too. So there’s two devil days. How fascinating!

Yesterday, the supposedly day of the devil, was a very good day indeed. First, it’s the day after all quizzes. It’s the day my Maths lecturer finally made a joke where he actually showed a smile on his face (by the way, 99% of the time he’s always wearing this serious face). It’s also the day I helped a friend 2000 miles away from Malaysia. It’s a day, where The Engineering Newsletter got tons of ideas pouring in to further improve it’s already wonderfulness. And it goes on and on. All the good things happened. It’s definitely the day of the devil, unless the devil too has turned towards good.

Totally irrelevant. The Omen, the movie that is supposed to be all about the devil wasn’t banned by the censorship board of Malaysia! What a miracle! Seeing that the banned DareDEVIL and HELLboy, why is the Omen excluded? Daredevil and Hellboy has nothing to do whatsoever with the devil or hell, well may be Hellboy has a little but the character appears to be on the good side. And here comes The Omen, a movie that’s based 100% on the devil and Satan related stuff and it passed the censorship board? Why?! Just because the title of the movie doesn’t contain the word hell/Satan/devil/demon, so it’s not banned?!

Sometimes I just wonder why is the Malaysians-leading-the-country-and-those-that-directly
-influence-our-lives’ brains are so hollow. You ban movies that has the word hell/devil in the title but has nothing to do with hell/devil/Satan but you don’t ban movie that is 100% related to the devil/Satan just because there isn’t a word in the title that indicates those words?! How more clever those Malaysians up there in those offices be?! Totally don’t understand their mentality. Now wonder we’re marked as a country that has first class infrastructure but third class mentality. It’s a fact all of them up there are trying to deny it but can’t because they know it’s true, it’s very true indeed.

I’m disappointed and hoping for a better future for our already deteriorating country.

Here I Am

Filed under: Academic, Announcements, Blahs — Guang @ 7:27 pm

…once again. But I’m not torn into pieces.

But I’ve just put together pieces of torn papers all into one whole and complete piece!

The Engineering Newsletter (TEN) is finally put together into one whole piece. An 18 page long newsletter filled with eye catching pictures, interesting topics, juicy news and deep thinking quotes.

Just presented it to the Head of Department yesterday and he seems pretty impressed and happy about it. He was actually surprised that we actually compiled a newsletter all in just one month! I thought 1 month is already very long for a newsletter but heck, we’ve just done and completed the First Edition of TEN, soon to be published and distributed.

Since yesterday, the Head of Department has many visions for the newsletter. He has suggested one too many ideas for us to add to our already impressive newsletter. Well, it’s all for the better anyway.

Oh, by the way, Karen and I are going to interview the principal of Taylor’s College! I’m so nervous about it. I’ve never interviewed a person of such great vision and responsibility which can lead and operate a college that managed to maintain its high standards throughout the 36 years of its history. The whole purpose of the interview is to actually find out more about the recent news of Taylor’s College being given University College status. Finally after donkey years of being a college and many institutions starting off as a University College or even University without going through the hierarchy, Taylor’s is finally a University College!

Finally, the newsletter is going to be published! Very very soon. Can’t wait to see what other’s think about it. TEN, THE Engineering Newsletter.
