Choice

Filed under: Blahs, Frustration, I Love Malaysia, Opinions — Guang @ 10:02 pm

We do have a choice. But the government seems to be making the wrong choice on this.

Hisham: Exams to remain bilingual

KUALA LUMPUR: It is definite – students will continue to have the option of using two languages for Science and Mathematics subjects in public examinations.

Responding to various reports on the matter, Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein reiterated that the Government had decided to maintain the status quo.

“It will remain bilingual,” he told reporters after presenting prizes to the winners of the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge.

The biggest problem, he added, concerned those in primary schools and rural schools.

“If we insist on one language, there will be a major impact on these pupils and will increase the gap between those in rural and urban areas. So we will maintain the bilingual approach,” he said.

He was clarifying news reports yesterday which had quoted him as saying that the decision not to force students to use only English for the two subjects in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) would only be confined to next year.

Hishammuddin said much also depended on the teachers’ abilities, noting that while many had been trained, there was room for further improvement.

“Maintaining the policy won’t affect anyone, as students will have the option of answering in English, Chinese, Tamil or Bahasa Malaysia, depending on their capabilities,” he said.

The policy of teaching Science and Mathematics in English was implemented in phases, starting off with Year One, Form One and Lower Six students in 2003, and the initial plan was to have students answer only in English for these subjects from next year.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had announced that UPSR candidates would continue to have the choice of taking the two subjects in either English or Bahasa Malaysia or the vernacular language of their school.

Hishammuddin had then said on Sunday that secondary students would also continue to have the dual-language option in public examinations.

Meanwhile, the minister also said at the function that the focus for November under the National Education Blueprint 2006-2010 would be on strengthening national schools. He said this was to ensure that they would be the school of choice.

“We want to improve their performance in various areas and offer programmes that meet the requirements of parents from different backgrounds,” he said.

Why should the government worry so much about those in the countryside where their English isn’t so good. If they decided to make it compulsory for everyone to answer their Maths and Science paper in English, then those whose English need improvement will have no choice but to improve their English whether or not they are in the city or at the countryside.

Every year they delay this decision, a whole generation is wasted and ending up coming out as incompetent graduates with insufficient standards of English. The government is being too kind. Without any form of force, how can the country progress further is we let its people slack behind. It’s human nature to make as little effort to get the most outcome. So with the choice of answering the paper in Malay and with their foundations in Malay, obviously the majority of students will be answering the papers in Malay.

Like DUH! Common Malaysia, you can do better than this.

Skypephone

Filed under: Blahs — Guang @ 4:23 pm

There it is in all its glory. The Skypephone! Pretty, sleek and stylish. Oh how I so want one of those.

Free Skype to Skype calls is of course its main selling point. But it’s just like any other phone just that there’s free calls using the Skype program integrated in the phone. Skype chat sessions on a computer appear as text messages on the phone! How great is that!

It’s going to be launched on the 3rd of November in the UK and the current provider is mobile phone provider, 3. Free unlimited data plans that come with the phone for no extra cost is just the perfect plan.

3G, 2MP camera, free Skype calls, unlimited data plan. Oh how I so want one of those! iWoot!

Cleanliness

Filed under: Blahs, Frustration, I Love Malaysia, Opinions — Guang @ 7:14 pm

WARNING: This post is going to anger quite a fair portion of readers but I can’t stand this anymore hence I am going to rant all about cleanliness among British university students. I’m NOT saying every student is like that but a specific group of people that really needs a check-up to smack them awake. Please read the disclaimer before reading on.

All this while, Asians are considered less clean by many in the western world. Asian streets are dusty and dirty, filled with rubbish and litter. Asian parks and gardens are filthy with dog poo and even more litter. Asian stalls are infested with dust and flies. Asian houses are infested with rats and bugs. Asians are judged even before they introduce themselves.

Yes, Asian roads and parks might be dirtier compared to their western counterparts but people tend to generalise and judge a book by it cover. We might look dirty on the outside but when you look closer on the inside we are not as dirty as you think we are.

Before I start comparing how much cleaner we Asians are, I’ll start pointing out certain outstanding points that I’ve witnessed since my first day being here in the UK.

Yes, I’ll admit, British roads, parks and public areas are generally much cleaner than Malaysian counterparts. But that’s about it I see that’s clean. Only on the outside.

Once I enter a house, it’s a different world. Firstly, shoes are worn EVERYWHERE in the house. In the living room, in the kitchen, in the toilet, even in the BEDROOM! THE BEDROOM!!! That’s already more than enough to freak me out. I just can’t imagine whatever that one has stepped over while walking outside of the house and bringing the filth of the outside world into the house. One might just walk over a pile of dog poo without realising it and then happily walking into the house with his shoes happily spreading the dog poo all over the floor like butter on bread. Worst is, asking guests to remove their shoes is considered rude!

That’s just ONE of the main points I’m going to point out. Secondly, I just can’t help noticing the way dishes are washed. This one really freaks me out. First, dishes are piled up in a box with a mixture of hot water and soap. Dishes are then let to soak in the box for a length of time (varies between 10 minutes to 5 days). Dishes are then scoured with a sponge with detergent and without washing off the detergent, put onto the dish rack for drying. Who on heaven and earth have the right mind to think that leaving detergent on the plate and then later consuming dried detergent through the food on the plate is anything but good for ones health?! Some may claim that the detergent in this country is “edible” without any phosphates like those found in Malaysia. Edible or not, it’s still detergent. There’s this big fuss in the country about consuming food with so much chemicals in it but they just don’t realise they’re willing eating chemicals through their very own dinner plates.

Detergent = chemicals. Chemicals = bad for health. Bad for health = death. Death = no good.

Besides consuming vast amounts of detergent, sometimes, dishes and pots are just washed so simply. Not bothering to remove that few drops of pasta sauce left in the pot or the occasional burnt food stuck at the bottom of the pot. Food stuck at the bottom of the pot and not removed after a day or so will become part of the pot! Hard, sticky, disgusting and unclean. This is especially disturbing when one is sharing pots and pans with others.

Carpets are another nightmare. Not only that shoes are worn in the house but shoes are worn over carpets. Imagine all the dirt, mud, bacteria, and everything else from the outside world goes into the carpet. Vacuum cleaning will no longer be helpful to remove all these foreign pathogens in the carpet. Speaking about hoovering, hoovering is a once in a blue moon (varies from once a fortnight to not at all) activity. In Malaysia, we sweep the floor at least once every 2-3 days (everyday for those with maids) and we don’t have carpet all over the house and… we don’t and will never wear shoes in the house!

I can’t go any further, the more I think of it, the more disturbed I get. Putting food on the floor, eating food off the floor, rarely shower/bathe (varies from 3 days to a month), drinking from a shoe (WTH?!, isolated incident). Thinking of it drives me up the wall!

I should stop here and hopefully those reading this will change their views on Asians and most importantly themselves.

LIM GOH TONG

1917-2007

Today, our country has lost a great entrepreneur. Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, founder of Genting Berhad, owner of Malaysia’s first and only casino and also Malaysia’s highest theme park, third richest in Malaysia and 204th richest in the world, worth an estimated USD4.2 billion and father of 6.

His contributions to the country shall never be forgotten.

I’ve just realised that my blog has just passed the 10,000 views mark yesterday. Hooray! Sadly, I’ve not been updating this site as often as I did when I first started blogging 2.5 years ago. Well, since I have nothing much to rant about I shall just tell you about what’s happening here in Sheffield.

The 1 month of being in Sheffield mark has officially passed by 6 days ago and life is not getting any easier at all. The good things about this year is that I only have three 2 hour lecture a week which is great! The down side is I have 16 hours of allocated group design project time in a week. And our assigned design isn’t anything easy at all.

You’ll by blown away with this word I’m going to ask you which was thrown at me when I first received my assignment description.

Do you know what is CAPROLACTAM?

*faints*

Apparently, it’s a polymer used in the industry to produce the fibre nylon-6 which is used mostly in carpets. After more than 2 weeks of research we’ve found some information but nothing major about the processes used in industry which is the part where we’re supposed to design. We’re expected to design a new process to manufacture caprolactam. Similar to what I and a group of friends designed in my first year i.e. the Benzoic Acid plant. However, the benzoic acid manufacturing process is already made its foundation in industry and there are tons of information on it everywhere.

Caprolactam in the other hand is a relatively new chemical and existing large scale processes are starting to turn a loss as the price of oil pushes towards the US$90 mark. Benzene is the main raw product used in the manufacture of caprolactam and the most common way to get benzene is from petroleum which if prices increase any further world caprolactam production could be jeopardized.

Therefore, it’s our job to find alternative processes to manufacture caprolactam preferably without using benzene and we’ve found a recycling process using carpets. It’s a back process from nylon-6 in the carpets back to caprolactam. Hopefully it’ll be a successful choice as our group is left way behind other groups in the class.

Hopefully, we’ll be able to pull this through with the help of our supervisor of course. Without him, we’re lost from square one. We’ll I’m off to meet him in 30 minutes.

*crosses fingers*
